Shit like this makes people go back to reddit. At least there’s more content and getting banned from one million user subreddit doesn’t stop you from going to another big sub. Here, if you get banned in one or two of the big instances you have to become a lurker. I take pride in being able to disagree with the dominant opinion in a reasonable way, but these .ml mods are unreasonable.

It can be news on topics you’re interested in, blogs on topics you’re interested in, comics, subreddits, etc. To give an idea, I follow:

• Ars Technica for tech news
• NASA for space news
• Local blogs on food/events/news/ going on in my city
• RockPaperShotgun for gaming news
• “A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry” for blog posts from a history professor
• Richard Y Chappell for blog posts from a philosophy professor
• A few YouTube channels
• A few niche Reddit feeds
• XKCD for comics (most webcomic artists have an RSS feed)

Depending on your RSS app, you can also follow podcasts. I use InoReader for the above but I prefer a dedicated podcast app. There’s good/entertaining RSS feeds on the internet if you’re willing to curate it! It’s nice to get away from internet comments.

Honestly, just set up an RSS feed. The internet is a bunch of isolated echo-chambers where you self-select into the chamber with the narrative you favor.

I’m not a tech person, so I’ll take the lowest hanging fruit. The obvious answer is to write a program that can detect AI. Then there will be a competition between AI fakes and AI detection. This is similar to what we have in sports. There are forbidden enhancement procedures (e.g., steroids, blood doping, etc.) that have to keep improving in subtlety so not to be detected by Anti cheating measures.

After the reddit exodus I started creating memes for the first time and posting them on Lemmy. I’ve learned that it’s harder to be funny than I thought. Also a lot of time/effort and I have actually important things in my life that I focus on. Reposting was also kinda fun but what’s the point really

Agreed, Facebook is terrible. But I’d say that Lemmy and Reddit are on a par (as regards users and mods). Perhaps Lemmy’s major upside is the decentralized structure, but then you lose out on the niche content that Reddit offers.

I’d be interested to see whether this holds for all the COVID variants. Especially since the virus is now endemic and will continue to mutate. Obviously, they’ll keep researching and we’ll see in time.
