So every time you deal with somebody in a different location, you can’t assume anything about the hours and times you have to ask them or go look it up Even if you have a decent idea where they live because you’re not going to know the time disparity of every city out there.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If AI was going to advance exponentially I'd have expected it to take off by now.English
8·9 months agoThe exponential problem has always been there. We keep finding tricks and optimizations in hardware and software to get by it but they’re only occasional.
The pruned models keep getting better so now You’re seeing them running on local hardware and cell phones and crap like that.
I don’t think they’re out of tricks yet, but God knows when we’ll see the next advance. And I don’t think there’s anything that’ll take this current path into AGI I think that’s going to be something else.
Even before the current fucked up state of affairs, lobbying was (and still is) a thing.
I used them for a couple of years. But I kept finding that when I went to re-sign up for new vendors they wouldn’t support the cards for some reason. Has this gotten better?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are you buying now to avoid upcoming price increases?English
16·1 year agoFood, but not primarily for cost savings as most regular used things things don’t last longer than a year, which cost wise won’t bridge the gap.
55 lbs of 00 flour in the chest freezer, still have about 25lbs of AP flour in there. 1 30lb bag of Jasmine Rice, 1 25 lb basmati. I still have a ton of beans and and dry pasts in mylar/oxy absorb sitting in barens cans for long term storage. When covid started, I had 1 million calories in storage. I don’t plan to go back to that, but I intend to be able to hunker down for a long time.
For work, I’m pushing to purchase more laptops before tariffs.
I’ve considered stowing fuel with a stabilizer but even if prices double on fuel, I don’t use enough of it to make a difference.
It would be a good time to buy any lithium ion batteries and finish off those ali-express/temu orders.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think the age demographic on Lemmy is?English
2·1 year agoHonestly, it had more validity behind it in the '80s. When you were just starting out your career you didn’t have a house yet you didn’t have any wealth amassed, The ideals of the left really shown through. But once you got older and started having some money, the fiscal Republican ticket sold you on tax cuts and provided boosts to help certain investment opportunities. It was still mostly just bullshit to make themselves rich but there was some financial opportunity there. It’s pretty much long gone for middle-class advantage anymore though.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What song did you love until you found out what it was about?English
13·1 year agoNot so much found out about but songs that didn’t used to bother me now kind of bother me. I was a very big Stone Temple Pilots fan, Even though the rhythms slap the songs are a little too rapey these days for my taste.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•what should one archive in a fascist regime?English
1·1 year agoHonestly I think the hardest part is identifying it and locating it.
Probably need to start a community around it. People link to stuff. Pay walls would have to be dealt with. In the vast majority of cases that’s not too difficult. No it does start getting less available around video sources. IP restrictions will be a pain in the ass.
Recording the video is messy. YT-DLP could work for some things, But honestly with the level of what’s coming I’d be afraid of leaving fingerprints on anything. Probably throwing a full screen player up in a 1080p window and using OBS on it would be the safest. Could probably get away with using an elgato to capture the HDMI signal up to 4K.
Speech to text models are light enough to run on raspberry pi. They’ll need to be vetted. They’re not highly accurate. Captioning is a great community task.
Organizing an indexing the captions, there’s no shortage of free database software. I probably start with sqlight to keep things portable and fluid. Moving to Maria or Postgres when things get too slow, But then we’re going to have to host it. Anonymous hosting is a completely different ball of wax.
Storing the data would get out of hand quickly. It’s trivial enough to buy a single 20 tb hard drive and store more than we’d need for years. But then hosting it anonymously would be difficult to say the least. Even the markers of these conversations would be traceable enough for us to be located. Paying for a private enough nude to be safe is going to be pricey over time.
I’m sure archive.org would take it, But honestly I wouldn’t put $5 on them surviving a couple of years into the new administration. What they’re doing is to inconvenient to too many corporations with deep pockets.
IPFS would work, well about as well as it works anyway, but that’s the opposite of anonymous.
Edit: come to think of it it would be a hoot to run it on the short video federated platform. Just keep the database somewhere else. Again not anonymous enough for my tastes, But what I had a little bit of fun to the project.

10·1 year agoI don’t understand this sentiment
There’s a lot we can do right now, but the most important thing is organizing
Organizing? Resistance? Armed? That’s honestly insane.
You’re going to organize against half the US? Gonna start a civil war with every last (fully armed) enemy in your own backyard?
They could blockade cities from food and shut down any movement in 3 days.
The Civil War worked efficiently because there was a battlefront. This is more of a Republican Soup.

Okay, I get it, you don’t know time zones already so you have to research every time but most people don’t think of the other people please.
