  • I can’t speak for Canada but the American unemployment system is broken like the rest of them are. It won’t pay enough for a lot of people. I know more than one person who wouldn’t get it at all after they got screwed over on an appeal which meant that they had to pay back what they were already sent, often many weeks later. If it’s not paid back then you just won’t receive unemployment until it is.

There’s also fields it can be hard to break in to. They tend to be small and insular so getting a bad rep from one can blackball you from your dreams. Doubly so or more if you’re a women or otherwise not a straight white Christian guy.

Cutting is also not an uncommon mental health issue. With any number of other things weighing down it can easily become a more reasonable seeming option.

There’s a whole world of experiences out there. A lot of people are desensitized to things you’d probably find outlandish.

  • I wanna disagree with you here. I recently dove in to ripping my DVD collection. On average it seems to take 10-20 minutes to rip and then 20-30 to reencode into a more reasonable file size. That’s longer than some downloads but not nearly all. If I’m doing a bunch I can do them simultaneously and save some time that way too.

It’s all moot anyhow, since op mentioned a data cap. I just wanted to offer some perspective I happened to have.

  • I’m no expert but I’ll offer my input until one shows up.

I use Ubuntu for my Plex server. It eliminates a lot of your complaints with Windows. It’s less resource heavy, you update it yourself, mine runs 24/7 unless I’ve done a kernel update which requires a restart, and that’s just restart time.

It’s definitely among the more ease of use distros, and what you don’t already know will generally not take much effort to find or get help with. Running command line only will free up resources and likely won’t take long to pick up what you need to run how you need to.

All that said I’ve not done anything with NextCloud or Bitwarden.

  • I’m very much in agreement with you. I think there’s an important value in seeking out those you disagree with. If your values can’t stand under scrutiny then you really do need to carefully consider them.

At the same time there’s space between what you disagree with and what is harmful to your state of mind for most people. Plenty of people don’t want to see anything NSFW and removing that is in no way turning their experience into a bubble.

Nuance is absolutely an important word here but I think the knee jerk isolation response to mention of blocking things is far more harmful than helpful.

FWIW I home at midwest.social. It’s not strictly for the Midwest US but you’ll see a lot of stuff for that region there. It’s also left leaning and I think the only instances they’ve defederated so far have been for extremism.

I’m also using jerboa on my phone and from my inbox there’s a speech bubble button which lets me make this response from my inbox.

I don’t know if either of these things will help you but I figured I’d offer them just in case they did.

  • Are children and young adults really more impressionable than Fox news, and thereby Facebook’s, audience?

I also don’t know that I agree with “targeted mostly at children and young adults”. There are very large parts of TikTok that would be wholly unappealing to your average kid. Not to mention that American social media started out very much targeted at children and young adults. Or have we already forgotten what the main demographics of Facebook and myspace used to be?

The problem with whataboutism here is that these conversations pretty much always involve TikTok and rarely other platforms until it’s brought up in comments where it can be dismissed as whataboutism.

Either they’re all a problem (it’s this one) or none of them are. We need to stop drawing arbitrary lines between offenders. It’s just giving a bunch of shit bags freedom to continue being shit bags.
