  • i used to struggle with this too, op.

the only reason i don’t struggle with it anymore is because i ran out of sufficient energy to struggle.

however, that was not what resolved it–not directly.

no longer agonizing over my conversations had other effects.

i decided that if all i can be is background noise, then i shall be background noise. and that … loosened my hesitation. i physically lost the ability to attach any kind of ulterior motive or emotional baggage to what i wanted to say, and so, my messaging became more open and honest as a result, in a way i never had the choice to implement at will. it took breaking down to no longer proverbially have a wall there.

and then, at another point after this had metaphorically cleaned my slate, i decided to start over by embodying what i felt was missing. i would be the warmth that no one was showing. i would greet, and encourage, and ask nonbinary question–but i don’t think this would have worked if i had not first shattered my own guard and begun engaging my social interactions with totally exposed vulnerability.

Yet another case in point of how shitty mastodon’s name is. Even its abbreviations are trash. The best time to change its name was before it started. The second best time is NOW. And the longer they go without fixing this, the worse it will be. As long as mastodon never rebrands, it is doomed to fall behind scummy oligarch controlled trash like threads.

  • Critical mass of users on social media platforms.

Back on Usenet decades ago they called it the “Eternal September”.

It used to be that every September, fresh University students would gain access to Usenet for the first time, and there would be a rough adjustment period where they don’t yet know the ropes, the lingo, the etiquette, the unspoken rules, and the expectant decorum, etc. Then one year, home internet service providers made Usenet accessible to ANYONE who subscribed… And from that day forward, it was like September every day, all year round.

Now the general riffraff are flocking to bsky because even THEY see that Twitter is sinking. This surge of new users have brought all their bad habits with them. Bsky must adapt or it too will fall.

  • Consider the amount of air its wings must displace in order to stay aloft. An equal quantity of mass at least. It’s passing through that air and, partly pushing it down, but also partially scraping it thin over the bowed top surface of the wing (the Bernoulli principle) which creates a pressure differential that lifts the wing, pulling it upward through suction, and thus the plane. That’s why the plane must go fast to fly, and why it “stalls” and falls if it isn’t moving through enough air. It’s also how turbulence affects a plane. Differences in air pressure mean that in pockets of low pressure there isn’t as much mass being displaced by the wings, not enough lift so it falls.

Now, it’s quite likely that my layman’s comprehension of this is flawed. But I’m sure it’s entirely possible that someone will correct me soon :3
