  • “badly made music” is a subjective idea.

“Inserting 30 C and D films” implies forcing someone, you are never forced, Spotify is not a goddamn radio station, you can just click on the track or album or artists you want.

That’s the whole selling point of portable music since the days of the original Walkman, that you listen to what you want, and not what’s on the radio.

Same thing with Netflix, you can click the search bar and type in your film or show of choice, you can even stop using Netflix altogether instead of just consooming like a slop vacuum.

Maybe touch non-algorithmically selected non-personalized grass too.

  • One of my biggest complaints about streaming (Pandora is guilty of this, too) is that anyone with a copy of Ableton and a mediocre talent can crank out tracks barely modifying the base toolset.

People being able to do art isn’t a bad thing, and I’m glad streaming has made publishing so much more accessible.

If you don’t like it you don’t have to listen to it. Every time some algorithm playlist churns out another spoonful of slop you don’t actually have to open wide.

You could just look up the artists you like and what other people like that’s like those artists, or look at collabs they’ve done or who remixes them or been remixed or covered by them and who they’ve been in bands with and what genre they tag to see who else is in that (micro)genre/niche.

I’ve never actually listened to someone else’s playlists, not man-made nor generated, only my own, and I regularly listen to extremely niche folks with 1k-40k Monthly Listeners all of whom are completely legitimate artists with unique great music, many of them electronic actually.

The truth is that 99% of people like copy-paste slop and that’s why they click on the slop and gravitate towards algos or charts for top ten artists.

And a global market for music with a low entry barrier means that it’s easier than ever to get started artistically expressing yourself for fun and for yourself, just as it should be, but still hard to be actually heard if you want to take it commercial, even if it’s fairer system than the gatekeeping of labels.

  • I’d say anime would get pretty toxic, just the sheer brainrot of moeshit seasonal trash watchers always seemed to burrow it’s way into every legitimately normal and civil discussion for a piece of media, everything was simping and shipping and very porn-brained in an extremely off-putting way.

It was all nauseating, I just liked cool weird foreign basket-weaving cartoons man it wasn’t this like, lifestyle or something that some people seem to live or a whole personality.

I’ll forever remember Juzoboys back in the day on /a/ but I’m so out and never coming back. At least I was there to say NEVER EVER for the last time when the first Kizu movie got announced.

  • Not to mention that gamers tend to have the shittiest politics. Idk what it is man, but over the last decade and a half I’ve watched Steam Discussions go from a dry and somewhat elitist gamefaqs to one of the worst cesspools on the internet by far, and it has a freakin’ swear filter, who tf would even risk their steam account going around talking smack like that I dunno.

A good community in a game is like finding the fucking higgs boson, you know when mfing warframe, known for having a great community back in the day - so much so it’s a selling point brought up by reviewers and it’s even basically expected that you will ask randos for help - turns the main chat (region chat) off by default then things are just… Not great.

Lol same I was all aboard for Mastodon then I realized it’s just Twitter but good and I never actually liked twitter because it’s so centered around random individuals and what they post, rather than what communities like as provided by them.

Everyone on here is equal, only the merit of content matters, but on twitter/mastodon it’s just random influencer larpers screaming into the void until out the void comes some random guy who never existed before named soatok and weird empty eyed hivemind people stare confused about how you couldn’t know this influencer/celeb who’s apparently “well-known”, it’s so fucking weird man.

Thanks for inoculating me against celeb culture and this bizarre form of twitter individualism, early internets.

  • Haven’t had a television set in my life ever. Don’t understand why they’re still sold either.

I’ll have YT on in the background on my desktop PC for noise while I work or do chores and occasional purposeful viewing for some select few channels mostly for me and my gf to watch and discuss while we lounge, (I turned the algo off with no search history, no home page, only subscriptions, ublock, dearrow, sponsorblock etc.)

For news I tend to prefer reading to stay on top of current events in politics but I’ll also overhear the general headline gist in the morning from political YT channels. I think people should generally try to stay informed and have a fully-formed worldview which necessitates a political ideology once they’re at least a few years into adulthood, lack of curiousity and worldliness isn’t anything to be proud of imho.

For shows I just download what I want and stream it off my Jellyfin server. I find out about them mostly through word of mouth.

Dunno/don’t care about sports or anything like that personally.

  • This. I wish I lived during a time where we moved past these archaic systems and prejudices.

Politics and economics are things that have the most negative direct impact on my life, it took me 15 years to immigrate to somewhere somewhat better and 10 of those were also spent fighting for healthcare while fighting landlords, shitty bosses and other assorted bastards while under assault from right-wingers day in day out in all mainstream media, always on the edge of deportation and death, so much time wasted in my early 20s.

Coming to terms with death being in all likelihood the very near future when you’ve just had a taste of life for the first time is an indescribable feeling.

Otherwise I have zero regrets, I’ve unironically never made any bad decisions even in hindsight and I make far more privileged people than myself jealous with what I’ve managed to make of my situation, including maybe the guy who downvoted this and the person above?
