Maybe I’m thinking of a different distributed system, but there’s one out there that replicates it’s files to different hosts if one ever goes down. With torrents people need to actively keep it up and it could be just one machine that eventually turns off, or one machine that the FBI raid and take down.

Edit: and crypto was for the payments and tracking of ownership. If you want it to be that easy to pay as pinging an IP, it can’t be credit cards or other similar methods. There are barriers all over the place to sending and receiving with that and it’d be rampant with fraud.

Ideally you want to use a hardware wallet though so the payment money doesn’t have to sit in a hot wallet connected to the internet, but that means pressing a physical button to initiate the payment, but it could just sit beside the computer, and eventually be built into computers.

Alternatively, you could have a hot wallet and it’s all seamless, but you risk the loss of funds from a compromised browser.

It’d include a permanent record of your ownership of what you purchased as well as long as you keep that seed phrase around, so you could redownload it if you lost the files.

Edit: And if the system was built around something like IPFS then the files would always exist.

Ah gotcha. So what I said about coupon codes would be valid, but affiliate links are different than the coupon codes. Also crazy they hide bigger discounts.

With $5,000,000 and a $250,000 withdrawal rate, you have a 53.2% chance of making it 45 years and not running out of money. 4% 200k is 79.8%, and 3.5% 175k gets you to 96.3%.

Take that same 5 mil though and do 4% for 25 years with a 65 year retirement age so money until 90, and it’s a 98.4% chance.

The city of Vancouver passed a motion to look into the city holding some Bitcoin as a financial reserve, and in the article I saw this mentioned

“But there are green efforts afoot in the bitcoin mining sector, and I think we could definitely look at those and how they might benefit paying for things like heating city pools and other sorts of services.”

It would be pretty cool if the city was heating a pool with it and then paying off their bills with the mined coins.

That said, I think the core concern can be rephrased in a way that gets at the essence, and to me there’s still a live issue that’s not relieved simply by noting that this requires probable cause.

Well ya. The whole thing is really fucked in the first place. It’s very disturbing that it was ruled they can compel biometics in any circumstance.

In a far off future, this ruling would probably even allow a mind reading device to figure out a PIN, which would be protected, because they didn’t force you to say it, and reading electrical signals isn’t really any different than reading ridges on a finger.

There’s no reason a company couldn’t release the info legally unless it was under something like AML (anti money laundering) laws and you were flagged as a criminal. They legally can’t disclose why in that case.

Using a different OS isn’t reason enough, if they were telling the truth about the legal restrictions.

It’s used to help secure the businesses app yes. It helps with things like preventing resource abuse which would cost the company money. E.g. querying mass amounts of data on a loop to increase the companies bill.
