  • I dunno, it’s like, the instance admin has the right to trim the instance in a manner that cultivates the community they want to see. I’m legitimately not looking to start drama. I just don’t want to post on the midwest.social lotrmemes sub now. That’s the great thing about the Fediverse, decentralization and such.

If they want to make the migration, not only is that cool, that is amazing and not only will I happily mod the other comm’s mods, but step down from modding myself because honestly I mod too many communities as it is. But I’m not looking to make a case for abandoning the other lotrmemes sub, and I imagine most people will not have much interest in admin drama.

  • It’s more like “We found the guy pulling the lever on the trolley problem, only his trolley problem is ‘people die or I get less money’, and he has the trolley run over the people every time”

Unfortunately, there’s a long line of twats behind him drooling over their chance to make the trolley run over human beings in exchange for money, so killing him doesn’t really have the ‘trolley running over people averted’ effect that the trolley problem is usually based around. You’re just punishing a shithead killer by killing him. Which, while hilarious, lacks the moral quandary that the trolley problem is meant to highlight, since no one is actually saved.

It’s one of those things where the institutions of society can and must genuinely pursue the killer (albeit not at the level they actually are, expending a disproportionate amount of resources compared to if one of us commoners was killed), but if I saw the person who killed the CEO, I didn’t.

  • Funny enough, consistent branding actually was a very high priority of the Roman government! The Romans put a high priority on being able to tell when something was official by the way it was made, said, or appeared - everything from edict wording to fashion to architecture - entire varieties of marble were subject to imperial monopolies to prevent non-authorized use!

In a time before easy verification from centralized communication, getting ordinary people to recognize what is and isn’t official at a glance is very advantageous!

  • Marx opined that certain material conditions had to be achieved before a socialist state could be successfully made. These material conditions include bourgeois capitalist democracy. Marx explicitly said that capitalism forges the tools with which it will be destroyed.

A certain subset of communists known as Marxist-Leninists decided that bourgeois capitalist democracy wasn’t necessary if you just oppressed people REALLY hard, you could skip straight to a socialist state. And because they ‘succeeded’ in overthrowing traditional Marxists in 1917 Russia and getting the full power of a massive country to spread their ideology, they’ve had bootlickers calling their particular brand of insanity the only ‘real’ form of communism ever since.

When we think of ‘communist’ countries, we think of Marxist-Leninist countries which tried to jump from feudal societies to socialist societies, which, quite obviously from the results, doesn’t work. Doesn’t stop the cultists from licking boots, of course.
