I think it’s good there are several projects that try to solve similar problems. It makes for such a diverse solution pool.
!anytype would fit the bill nicely. But it’s important to keep in mind that it is still in heavy development.
That being said, it costs nothing to give it a try, it’s practically seamless to get started with. :)

It’s not what OP asks after, but I figure Gource is worth an honourably mention.
Yggdrasil Network might be an alternative.
It’s a breeze to set up, just be mindful about setting up your firewall and allowed keys, depending on your use case.
There also was a time when the entirety of the human language would fit in this thread.
But then again, any users would also then need multiple accounts for read/write share if you don’t want everyone seeing everyone else’s stuff
My partner and I have each our account, with private calendars in, and a household account with the shared calendars in. It’s not perfect, but it works for a small group
I bypassed all that by just making another account, with a shared password 🤷🏻
I agree though, it shouldn’t be that much of a hassle.
I really like it, though the UI is a bit “old facebook”. I would have loved to use it for a club I’m in, but it doesn’t seem to have the organisational capabilities I’d need, like user roles and default channels to follow, and stuff like that.
That said, as a single user instance, I don’t have any issues. It is easy to install and keep up to date. And the connectors to other protocols seems to work fine
