  • Is your name a TrageDeliah or something?

But as someone with a Chinese Name in an English-Speaking country, I do feel very weird when someone calls my name…

They’ll never get the real version of the name, only an Anglicanized version of it.

It feels weird, like it feels kinda like a name that only Chinese people are supposed to call me, having a non-Chinese say that name feels like if a teacher called you those nicknames only your family members are supposed calls you by…

I never feel weird saying someone elses name. Like wut bruh?

But yea I get it, the phone call giving their name is very weird to me… like c’mon you’re supposed to be a faceless nameless person who I talk to for 10 minutes lol

Even in person customer service is still weird unless you’re more long term… like I’m a client or something… like real estate agent or car sales person

Not fucking customer service or a fastfood, dont wanna know your name and I don’t like giving out mine either

  • Oh fuck, I still have no idea…

Hopefully I’ll have a plan for this digital era stuff when i become a parant

My parents limited me to like 30min to 1 hour of computer usage when I was like 8 and first had internet access

Then I remember from 12 and onwards, I basically had no restrictions… parent experienced the internet the same time as we did, tech illiterate, so they didn’t know anything about how do parental control stuff…

But even after 12, mom did wanna turn off the wifi at night, especially before I started highschool, but sometimes I wanna stay up and I just sneak downstairs and turn it back on lol

    Anyways… probably something like:

ban social media till at least 16, and for Youtube restrict to only a select few educational channels, maybe allow direct messaging with classmates, but I think all messages should get logged and sent to me at least till like 12 (am I too authoritarian?). Game time is limited to 30 minutes max; 1 hour on non-school days, at least till like age 10… then maybe be lenient if thing go well…

Politically extremist sites like 4chan would be part of the blocklist… aint no way I’d let that shit ruin my children.

About the porn stuff… oh yea I heard about it in 5th grade and honestly that was probably wayyy to early for me… it was kinda… shocking…

I’d silently add blocklist for porn until like at least… idk 15 or 16… (is this reasonable? or am I just helicoptering?)… actually idk if I even wanna drop the blocklist till like 18…

Like I’m not gonna get mad if they managed to get access to it anyways… it just feels kinda weird from a parent’s perspective to know your kids have access to those things that young… know what I mean?

Okay idk I feel like I’m gonna end up even more helicopter-y than my parents…

Idk its just… if hypothetically I have childen, I’d really wanna protect them (or at least try to), and then end up overprotective…

  • @hegar@fedia.io @hengji@lemmy.world

Hope y’all don’t mind me joining in the conversation lol 😅

I was born in 广州 (Parents from 台山), family emigrated when I was around 8.

I kinda wonder what Guangzhou is like nowadays… my mom and older brother is going there visiting right now and I didn’t feel like going cuz of depression and that felt too stressful, and also I wasn’t sure how the firewall thing would work… I’m kinda addicted to stuff like Youtube…

I don’t even have much memories anymore… I wonder if there’s any remnants my “footsteps” in my old apartment.

I remember a memory of having 小笼包 but don’t remember much, but I recently had some in the US tho…

I’ve been to Hong Kong like once when I was so young, barely even old enough remember it.

  • FYI: Roaming on a foreign carrier completely bypass firewall as far as I know…

Mom is visiting China right now and she told me she can visit Youtube on her phone data, but not from my Aunt’s wifi.

Its $50 USD for a 30-day pass with merely 15GB of data on T-Mobile (slowed to like 256kb unlimited afterwards)… feels kinda expensive… but she mostly just want the unlimited phone calls feature tbh

Basically if you manage to get a sim (or eSim, but that requires importing a phone since phones sold in China do not have eSim capability) from outside China with an active plan, you’re good to go.
