I’ve gone on total media blackout, it was destroying my mental health. I even deleted the news widgets on my phone. I have two exceptions:

• Lemmy, but I have a very curated list of communities I follow. No “news”, no politics.
• I follow RSS feeds from sites/people I like. For example, Cory Doctorow, Electrek, Kottke, Daring Fireball.

Through this, I eventually learn about the “important” stuff, but it’s not in my face at all times, baiting for clicks and inducing rage.

The difference being you can’t stop a federated protocol. I was being cheeky, but banning or at least regulating algorithm-based social media would do nothing but good for society. User engagement and user safety are directly at odds in a for-profit model.

You’re right, electric cars aren’t really the same. That being said, the hype was pretty high about 5 years ago and these days, there are articles written (though largely incorrect) about the waning demand for EVs. At this point, the hype has decreased and eventually there will be a resurgence in demand. EVs are absolutely the future, I own one and love it.

Do yourself a favor and do NOT eat a hamburger in Hamburg. Frankfurter in Frankfurt, not bad.

This is the part of the AI conversation that always bugs me. People have just concluded that the hype is real and we’ve reached the point that people fear in movies. They don’t understand that it’s mostly bullshit. Sure, the fancy autocomplete can toss up some boilerplate code and it’s mostly ok. Sure, it saves me time scrolling through StackOverflow search results.

But it’s simply not this all-knowing miracle replacement for everything. I think everyone has been conditioned by entertainment to fear the worst. When that bubble bursts, IT will be the part which wreaks havoc on the economy.
