My father gave up red meat and soda around 2002. My dad’s clone, my uncle didn’t give up anything. Yes they are clones, I sequenced them myself. Since then my dad has always been at least 20lbs heavier than my uncle despite having almost identical activity levels since they had similar jobs and shared hobbies for most of the time. Now 23 years later my dad has heart congestive heart failure and a torn meniscus in his knee while my uncle has a perfect heart but has needed both knees replaced. I think the biggest difference is definitely the sugar because my uncle tends to drink diet soda and my dad fruit juice, tea and coffee.

I’ve gone from someone excited about new products to I don’t trust anything that I didn’t build. We are currently discussing moving our group chat off discord, but I’m biochemist and my circle are similar professions and I’m still learning how to properly host things.
bblkargonaut@lemmy.worldto Privacy@lemmy.ml•Bankrupt 23andMe Just Sold Off All Your DNA Data1·2 months agoIn the before times we used hamachi, but it was hard. Eventually, Skype was born and it was good and easy. It worked like a phone and many StarCraft 2 team games were won. But Skype was corrupted by the many Nigerian princes and hot Ladies who only needed a few dollars to turn your life around. This corruption was then baked so deeply into windows it took registry edits to exorcise it. But all was good was we now had discord which took the ideas of hamachi and Skype and delived a better experience than both.

For analogy sake think about all the stupid shit Microsoft bought and killed or all the chat apps Google created and killed, this going to be Regeneron’s Skype.
bblkargonaut@lemmy.worldto Privacy@lemmy.ml•Bankrupt 23andMe Just Sold Off All Your DNA Data3·2 months agoIf you really want to get your parents sequenced for your own personal use without it going into a database it’ll cost you about $500 per sample (cheaper if you know someone who can extract the DNA for you). You’ll get a set of fastq files for the reads that will cover almost their entire genome that you can then use with public databases or just store for future use. Another option is to sign up for a university study but you’ll have to be comfortable with their data use.
bblkargonaut@lemmy.worldto Privacy@lemmy.ml•Bankrupt 23andMe Just Sold Off All Your DNA Data4·2 months agoI honestly don’t know what they will do with snp data. These investors and VCs have been running scare peace articles for the last two years to drive the company into bankruptcy so that it could be sold and the data harvested. But I honestly think people are really overestimating the value of a dataset showing how different people are from a standard template. It’s good for ancestry and correlations but people forget they didn’t fully sequence samples. I fully expect the news cycle to change once they figure this out as they try to get people to resubmit DNA for nextgen sequencing, so they can try to salvage their investment.

I used it to mine when I wasn’t gaming until it became unprofitable, then to process sequencing data for my dissertation project while not gaming, and now it’s in my server.

Im in the process of buying a duplex instead of a single family as a hedge, so my cost of living will be low enough to survive on my wife’s part time salary if we can keep a renter. I will be planting food producing trees and bushes, and building garden boxes after close, and learning canning.

It Both Under and Overextrudes in Batched areas and sometimes leaves what looks like Overheated/Melted Ripples?English4·4 months agoNeed more information to properly diagnose. Is this a new issue? Are you using auto build leveling for every print? Have you tried cleaning everything and rerunning the system calibration? A lot of different things can cause similar issues and it’s hard to diagnose from images alone.
I just bought myself a Bambu P1S, after building and modifying ender3s since 2019. I love tinkering and customizing things but it’s nice to have a printer that just works. Its so reliable that my wife can now print her own stuff using the app instead of giving me a list. The only thing I really have to do is change the filaments loaded in the AMS for her. If you have no experience printing I would just get a A1 mini and use it until you run into the limitations.

(Used or New)English2·7 months agoIf you live near a college campus, check out their recycling center or campus surplus. Lots of IT departments just toss UPS when they upgrade equipment regardless of battery status. I like to grab APC ones because the battery replacements are easy to find and there’s usually a YouTube video for the exact model with someone refurbing it.
I have a PhD in biochemistry, a good job, a wife and a loving family. I have enough free time to contemplate my own place in the world and worry about if my work will have a positive or negative impact on society, because my grandfather who’s grandparents were slaves, started a real estate company by house hacking in the 1970s. That allowed my parents and me to live comfortable lives. Having this safety net allowed us to take risks and persue careers that we enjoyed.
I loved everything about the force awakens, but I will never forget the emptiness and depression I felt leaving theater after seeing the last Jedi. I know its from a place of privilege that I can feel this way, but I never had another piece of fiction hurt me so badly. I grew up deep into the EU and games and it was my way to escape the existentialism of my daily life, and I was looking forward to see my fictional hero at as a full power Jedi master on the big screen. Now all I feel is apathy when It comes to start wars.

The problem with 23 and me is that they are not maximizing the share holder value of the data they are sitting on. The CEO wants to keep the company in line with the principals they were founded on which is to protect the privacy and data of their customers, while using opt in studies to build data sets that can be studied or sold.
Investors want to enshittify the company, and have been organizing a campaign against to company to try to drive it into liquidation to buy the data, even though the company is profitable. I wouldn’t be surprised is they are funding these weekly omfg 23 and me bad articles.
bblkargonaut@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Just me or dragon ball is REALLY popular among black people, why is that?61·10 months agoI’m black, and I loved Dragon Ball, and back in the late 90s early 2000s when it was airing on Cartoon Network it was pretty much popular with everyone.
I can’t talk for everyone but the saiyan and Frieza arc in Dragon Ball z really stuck with me. Goku knew nothing about his family his people and their history. Then all of a sudden they show up and reck havoc on his life. Eventually he learns that his people were essentially enslaved and exported around the universe as babies to work for their slave owner Frieza, and when they started to organize they were wiped out. This arc ends with a final showdown between the Goku who now knows his history and the last of his race facing down the slave master Frieza who thought he was nothing but a monkey.

Extra leg room seats in normal economy are usually narrower than normal seats due to the table and entertainment. Also no unseat storage, but it’s less of a concern because once the flight is in air can just get your bag down.
I’m 190cm tall and 150kg. I just survived an 11hr flight on Turkish air boeing 777, following an 6hr flight on a Airbus a330 in economy on both. The Airbus was more comfortable. But Dramamine is your friend.
I’ve been buying used 12tb HGST from Amazon for $80.
