  • For my microwave its 20 second intervals. But also, let’s say I open the door mid-run, if the tray is rotating clockwise, when I restart it it will rotate counterclockwise. Every time you open it it reverses it’s rotation.

I don’t know if all microwaves do this, or just mine. I never really had cause to notice until I started making desserts and candies, where you often nuke for 10 seconds, stir, 10 seconds, stir to melt chocolate. Easiest to just set for 40 seconds and open/close than it is to reset each time. This is the only microwave I’ve done that with, though, so idk if it’s common

  • I’m in a rural area, super mountainous. Tmo has a tower near my home that allows for 5g home internet, but they won’t let us use it. Say we’re too far from the tower. So I signed up with a friend’s address and use it anyway. It works great. My only other options for Internet are dial up, sat, or PCs for people, which use one of those old school hotspot boxes (it’s income based, only 15 a month, and truly unlimited in case anyone is in need in the US). We used PCs for people for ages, but those boxes just aren’t as capable, and it’s pretty slow even with 4g/5g connection. Talking 3mbps was a really, really great day. I now get consistently 150-200mbps and have hit 250. It’s the fastest internet I have ever had.

  • If you’ve ever tried to have a conversation with an average person… well, you can’t.

I grew up in Virginia Beach/Hampton roads, and moved to Tennessee in 09 at 18. I’ve never really wanted to admit that outloud, to be honest, but I feel like the only normal person in this state sometimes. I’ve been here for over 15 years and I have met a grand total of 7 people I could have a decent conversation with, one of which is an Episcopal priest from another state, and 2 I met specifically through left wing organizing, so a group with membership that’s already higher than likely to be biased to education and intelligence. I knew people back home that were smart. I don’t mean educated, or some High Potential/Sheldon Cooper shit, I mean they were rational, intelligent human beings capable of common sense and able to hold a conversation. And remember, I was a teenager when I left. At 17 my peers in Hampton Roads were more capable at humaning than are my peers here at 33.

That makes me deeply sad, and I feel like such an elitist shit saying it out loud.

  • Initially thought I didn’t have one, because I was thinking it had to be, like, things you do or whatever. Like wood carving or building something. Then I realized I absolutely do. Lol

Philosophy and religious studies. Non dualism especially, but honestly, I just love learning about different philosophical ideas. I love Anthropology in general, and the differences and similarities between disparate cultures is downright fucking fascinating. People tend to think that the differences in, say, Hinduism and Christianity are pretty great, and they absolutely can be, but if you dive into the deep thinkers of either tradition you tend to find that oftentimes they’re trying to say the same things.

  • There’s an old comedy/parody of soap operas called SOAP. SOAP is the show Benson spun oft from. It starred, among others, Billy Crystal and Katherine Helmond. Absolutely amazing show that I can and will talk about for hours.

S1e9 has a scene in which Jessica (Helmond) discovers that her husband Chester is cheating on her.

She looks to her sister and says Oh, Mary, I would faint if I knew how

It’s one of the finest examples of writing, acting, direction… Everything. It’s a perfect scene, so much so that it inspired me to want to write, and is the reason I decided to go for a creative writing degree.

For anyone curious, SOAP was so hated by network execs, Christian right orgs and basically all of conservative America that by the end of it’s run all advertisers had pulled out except for vlassic pickles, and commercial breaks would just be pickle commercials over and over again during the break. You couldn’t watch it in most areas, because locals refused to run it. It featured the first openly gay character in a major network show, a trans story (which did not age as well as it could have, but was progressive for it’s time), a lesbian character, interracial relationships, suicide, race relations, crises of faith, extramarital affairs, divorce… In the 70s. It always punched up, and the black and gay characters were almost always the most clever, most witty and sharpest.

  • How does she feel about the current political climate as compared to that of her youth in Germany?

Before the war, did she or her family support the Nazis? I know a lot of people supposedly viewed it as, for want of a better term, a necessary temporary solution to the problems Germany was facing. Where did her family and she land on that? Did they support him during the war?

Before the war, Germany was a hotspot for queer folk, and from what I understand it was a pretty open secret, and outright public in a lot of areas and circles. How does she feel about trans issues and gay issues now? What about women’s rights?

    Less political questions:

if she could bring back anything that no longer exists, what would it be? Could be a custom, a technology, a food, anything.

If you or her are comfortable discussing sex, I’ve found that people of that generation, when I’ve been able to talk to them or read interviews, have some really fantastic stories about illicit affairs that can give you a lot of background/cultural information by way of what was verboten and the ways they got around it. Did she have any other affairs or trysts?

What’s the worst thing about life today compared to life when she was young?

Would she ever want to return to live in Germany if she were able to spend s significant amount of time there?

Favorite movie star of her youth?
