Internets origins lie in the Semi-Automated Ground Environment & the Phoenix Program. It was rolled out to CIA-approved universities & invite-only sites for journalists. It will still be part of a bright future. Technology looks sinister when it is held in its most developed forms by the worst people imaginable. They’re already scared of what they started.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is using a "clear browsing data on exit" option a good practice or just irrelevant annoyance?
4·15 days agoThe profile selector for Firefox (I use Librewolf) is a nice way to manage different settings for websites that need to keep browsing data. You can also use containers but I find alt-tabbing more easy to keep track of. Foxyproxy is good for this
I’m not falling for the old smol bean give me donations trick from large nonprofits supported by shit like the Open Technology Fund of the OSS. I have actual developers to support, after the genocide most of the countries they live in are committing is dealt with (https://lifeline4gaza.com/). I have more local providers but they don’t always play nice abroad.
I like Tuta more than Proton since they don’t try to get more info. But really you want to hook all the Tuta accounts up to Murena emails (they actually work with apps etc unlike Tuta & Proton etc) then add those to Addy.io, Firefox Relay, and Simplelogin. Bam infinity emails, they’re all searchable and you can archive them offline (since you’re using Arcane Chat or K-9 Mail or whatever)
I’m not paying for a service people force me to use lmao
Well, they did engineer that for a fake nature documentary. Maybe there is hope for us

Open Source@lemmy.ml•How does one get into Open Source, generally?
2·23 days agoYeah they actually recommend the Cheogram web client as a way to use the phone gateway on desktop in addition to Dino (and the irritating Jitsi/Jami SIP setup that works if you don’t mind two apps and are attached to your Gajim setup). I had not noticed, or that there is in fact a directory of public Jabber rooms, until today
IIRC you are American (sorry for the insult if not) which means you have a great phone gateway option. I did not: had to contact my telecom company tbqh it took like two months 🤣 🤫

Open Source@lemmy.ml•How does one get into Open Source, generally?
3·23 days agoIf you want to text normal people, I recommend Cheogram (XMPP) rather than Element. It’s more of an open internet standard, it’s very lightweight and battle tested, and the app I mentioned for Android can be bridged to phone+SMS gateways, there are some default services available or you can be very industrious and make your own
If you’re looking for more examples of software to replace what you have, Pipepipe is probably the best vehicle to directly stick your thumb in Google’s eye. It’s the most frequently-updated NewPipe fork

Privacy@lemmy.ml•"Scan to Verify You're Human": Google's reCAPTCHA is trialing a new "experimental challenge type" which requires desktop users to use an Android or iOS device to be able to pass it
14·28 days agoOn the bright side, this means they are really worried that privacy practices such as those popular among the Lemmy crowd can make their surveillance expensive or maybe even impractical at scale, rather than profitable. I’m never sure if it’s working, with firmware and all. Almost a good sign? Am I deluded?
Unfortunately the only way to escape this and retain a boot locked phone is GrapheneOS now. Used Pixels are cheap as fuck though.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•YSK: you can buy (email) accounts anonymously using darknet markets
2·28 days agoTutanota (uses recovery key) into Murena.io (free with rate limits) also works without any money lmao
If you’re in the USA look into JMP.chat. Cheogram is simplest in the US and Canads

Stores are always going to be capable of corroborating your presence with your card purchase, it’s how they get most shoplifters. Back when I lived in the states a lot of people around me got nabbed lifting but using cash + low profile in work clothes + look smart (Just Be Asian) + blind spots + small yields never failed me. You also have to watch out for your license plate being available to them. I would imagine now you have to walk to retailers for thoroughness, account for flock etc
Of course, none of this really matters versus being one of many. They have a scale problem. Who knows how much AI can cut it down to size. Gonna be more hungry people
