In the beginning it screamed at me. Images loaded line by line over minutes. The most novel thing was being able to message my friends, who would make a creaking door-opening sound when they came online, and set “away” messages with in-jokes or vague angsty song lyrics. I was told not to share any personal or private information, which made discussion rooms seem like mysterious masquerade balls. I could find anything about anything if I looked hard enough, and the minutes spent waiting for replies in discussion boards where your only caché was your previous interactions on the board felt like hours.

Huey: “Ruin the party? They love me. These people aren’t worried about us. They’re not worried about anything. They’re rich. No matter what happens, these people just keep applauding.”

marzhall@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your favorite instrument to listen to?5·1 month agoWhen I think of a classical instrument, I think cello - specifically this piece Shadow of Doubt by Yoko Kanno, where it has such a brooding tone and power.
Being a synthesizer nerd, I like those most, but they have such varied tones among them and even on the same synth; 4x Atlantis by Aphex Twin probably captures one of the tones I most love, and the entire “Orphans” piece hits much of the range.

That said I’ve def bookmarked that episode for watching. I lost track of Black MIrror, it’s a bit tough in that it’s so grim that each episode doesn’t really leave you wanting to watch the next one in my experience. But it’s had some bangers.

Just, regularly-schedule ad breaks in your call where “your friend” suddenly starts talking about how excited they are about Raid: Shadow Legends
marzhall@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do, relatively, so few of you set an avatar for your profile?13·2 months agoHeck, I was salty when the old site added avatars. I already ignored names and was weirded out by “popular redditors” culture before avatars, and it was annoying to see a logo next to a name coloring my perception of the comment. I’m here to read comments, not to look at avatars

But I’d believe it wasn’t quite as good as whatever photoshop had. I used the “never learn photoshop” trick to be happy with what I’ve got, but then I only edit images for fun.
…on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.

Because your information is what a number of services use to make money. Even before VPNs come into the equation, you’re undercutting the service’s ability to sell you by anonymizing yourself.
That said, as noted elsewhere here, VPNs can be used by bad actors which can get you just put on a massive block list; and in addition, VPNs can be used to circumvent regional protections such as provisions on what countries can watch what content on video streaming services, which those services also want to prevent and so can block known VPN addresses to avoid.

marzhall@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is one moral you have that most people don't agree with?102·3 months agoI have a take on this that I think no one will have fun with:
In my opinion there is no moral way to keep a cat as a pet.
Allowing cats to roam as they desire results in the aforementioned ecological damage. The opposite - keeping cats locked in a few thousand feet at best for twenty-odd years of life - is cruel.
As someone who was raised in the woods with outdoor cats and couldn’t imagine keeping them inside - even though we lost two as I grew up - it’s a circle I just can’t square. So I figure that if and when I get cats, I’ll dodge the question and adopt some older cats who were already raised inside and couldn’t be trusted to go outside safely anyway.
marzhall@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•HELP! How do I help educate my son about his body when I know nothing about boys?191·5 months agoIf he suddenly really wants to do his laundry one morning, don’t ask questions. (Wet dreams and embarassment being the context here.)
That’s about all I can think of that’s gendered, really.
I was ~9 when I got the talk from my Dad, and it was basic stuff about just the mechanics. It set things up so that, around 13, I went to him with questions about how I was feeling re: puberty. So even now it’ll be helpful to do the talk and show that you’re available as a resource.
In your case, your son likely has some idea from internet pornography and whatever he got in school, but it would still be helpful to go through the basics with him. I’d frame it as “I’m sure you know most of this, but i just want to make sure you know what’s important.” It might also be helpful to make clear that pornography is as much acting as TV is - don’t set his expectations on it, it’s people faking things for money.
Going over the importance of condom use also helpful at his age. Keep in mind, it’s not necessarily about what he’s going to use right away, but making sure he knows when he does need to know.
Then, I’d just be there for him and ask if he has any questions, and answer them frankly. Tell him he can come back later if he’s unsure.
It’s awkward and tough I’m sure, but it’ll be a help not just now, but going forward. Good luck!
marzhall@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was your favorite IRL needle drop moment?4·5 months agoDamned if I went looking for it and couldn’t find it. I’ve since lent it to an intern, put it in a funny place, moved twice, wasn’t anywhere I hoped.
In any case, I’ll try to recreate what I remember of “What I Heard 1.0”:
- Daft Punk - One More Time
- Kavinsky - Nightcall
- Benny Bennassi - E.T remix
- Madeon - Yelle Que Veux Tu remix
- Eric Prydz - Call On Me
- Lemaitre - Blue Shift
- Digitalism - Blitz
- Justice - D. A. N. C. E
- Duck Sauce - Barbra Streisand but a remix that said “Adam Jensen” which I can’t find :(
- Digitalism - Circles
- Daft Punk - Digital Love
- Studio Killers - Ode to the Bouncer
There is one missing track here as far as I remember - a Benny Bennasi bomb that I’ve looked for many times over the years, but haven’t found. And I’ve listened to a lot of Benny Benassi :(. Hopefully the CD shows up one day!
Edit: added nightcall, remembered I had that on there!
I love this. Between the people who didn’t notice it the same way I absolutely would not have, and the people who just say what obviously was intended, this could go forever and drive a couple of people absolutely insane.
