With the recent major update, Freetube implemented a new player which I like much better than the old one. With the new player, all keyboard shortcuts work well, that’s great for me because my Home Theatre PC is controlled by a wireless keyboard+touchpad.

In Freetube, reload is ctrl-R on Linux and Windows, and cmd-R on Mac. I have experienced the fact that if you leave a video paused for a long time (hours) then you need to refresh. If you have history active, after refreshing the video will resume from where you left, which by the way is better then actual YouTube where it will often resume from an earlier timestamp. I have not experienced the other issues you mentioned.

  • Any suggestions about Gnome extensions?

I use Gnome on a 42" tv the only thing I’ve done is increasing zoom level since the couch is a bit far from the screen. In the browser I set up the new tab screen to have big icons that link to some of my bookmarks, using a browser extension. That’s all I’ve done compared to a vanilla setup. I have been using that for a few years with no issues but curious about how I could improve my experience!

I use a browser on a desktop OS (Linux). I get what you mean that a browser on the tv is not nice UX, but there are some things you can do to improve the experience such as

    • bumping up the default zoom level (I prefer to do that at the OS level rather than in the browser settings so it also makes menus, buttons and other UI elements bigger)

    • getting one of those small wireless keyboards with integrated touchpad. The one I use is from Logitech and the batteries last for months.

Not everything is in the browser, I have downloaded a few desktop apps from Flathub (Freetube for watching Youtube, unofficial Spotify client etc).

The level of freedom you get from a desktop OS is so great that I would never go back to a “tv box” like Apple TV and similar things (I tried those and concluded they weren’t for me).
