The problem with ads is that we’re barely removed from the era of all ads being malicious trojans if you clicked one. All ads are still malicious, just less insidious. They’ll silo you off into an echo chamber rather than brick your computer. Some will still brick your computer though.
I block ads because I don’t want to see ads, but I don’t want to see ads because I don’t trust any of them. Until they fix that, they’ll stay blocked. I don’t care if you’re Google or some boutique website, I’ll block them all.

It’s an acknowledgement that there’s a massive problem.
These companies are literally willing to bankrupt you to death. Their behavior is inexcusable. They profiteer off of human suffering.
We live in a country founded by people who were unhappy with the status quo and were willing to pick up a gun to change things. We shouldn’t act surprised that it still happens. I don’t think we should celebrate it, because it’s sad that this is happening in the first place, that someone feels they need to do this. This problem is solvable, and it can be solved civilly, or it will be solved uncivilly.
There used to be a way you could download all of the Wikipedia text as a PDF. I’d pop that bad boy on a Kindle and have my own Hitchhiker’s Guide.
While we’re at it, let’s go back to 10nm chips too. That’s Intel’s bread and butter. Phones get bigger every year. Why not transistors too?
I ran Fedora on my Framework when I first got it, a couple years ago, but the battery life and sleep behavior was just awful. Love Linux on desktop, hate it on a laptop. Should I revisit?

I really, really like it. They’re really durable, easy for a kid to use, and pretty inexpensive.
Only con is if you drop it and the ball pops out, it can roll under the couch.
I use a HTPC. Using a traditional mouse is the worst. For a long time I used a Mac Mini because the Apple Bluetooth trackpad is the only external trackpad I’ve ever used that’s any good.
Then I got a Bluetooth trackball mouse. It’s by far my favorite. It’s rugged, easy to toss around, and it just lives on a couch arm.
The only steaming device I have is a Chromecast that’s exclusively used to turn on and off the TV.
One of the things that Game of Thrones did well early was always ensure the payoff was worth it. If you didn’t like an episode here or there, it was fine because it advanced the plot enough that you still followed the breadcrumbs and another episode down the line made it worth it.
Season 8 was so bad because many people tolerated elements of seasons 5, 6, and 7 because they were hoping for payoff. When that payoff was underwhelming at best and utterly nonsensical at worst, people tuned out fast. People spent hundreds of hours over a decade watching the show and discussing it with their friends, and in the end, it wasn’t worth it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something disappear so completely and quickly from the cultural zeitgeist.

It’d make a pretty good movie, 2 hours tops.
It does one of my favorite things, by strongly blending two genres: mystery, and sci-fi. A sci-fi show, movie, or book that’s purely sci-fi is rarely good. Same goes for fantasy. Season 1 of Game of Thrones is good because it’s primarily a mystery/drama story in a fantasy setting. A New Hope is great because it’s a western, coming-of-age story in a sci-fi setting. Rebel Moon is garbage (for many reasons) because it’s pure sci-fi schlock with no nuance.
Subway spent a long time and a lot of marketing money training their customers that a sandwich should cost $5 and taste fine. Not great, but fine. But then the doubled the cost and halved the quality. They spent years teaching customers to avoid the sandwich they now serve.
Little Caesars had a similar problem, but instead of doubling the price, they raised it $1. Cheap pizza for $5 is fine, and cheap pizza for $6 still feels fine.
I hate this approach to business.
Coupling subscriptions with forced obscolecence is a nightmare. If HP made the best printer money could buy, using it with a subscription model would be a hard sell. But they make shit printers that die at the drop of a hat, so coupling them with a subscription is asinine.
Logitech makes a decent mouse, passable webcams, and shit keyboards.
Just in case anyone from Logitech ever reads this, I own 2 MX Verticals, an MX Ergo, and an MX Master 2S. I love them all, but I’d rather use an OEM bog standard Dell mouse than pay for a subscription.
Yeah, about a year ago when all the “wow, lemmy really feels like an edgy early internet discussion forum” threads were popping up, I think people forgot that those early forums were just eternal flame wars between communists and anarchists.
I mean, if the choice is instant, painless death or decade after decade of your parents asking why you don’t own a house, I guess death is fine?
I get that ads pay for a free internet. But that doesn’t mean that 60% of my screen needs to be malware to read a local news article.
Until advertisers act in good faith, I block as much as possible.
I think what Jobs really understood was that in a world of Ford, people crave a Ferrari.
Making the best be beautiful and accessible is hard, but you do it through focus and intentionality. Jobs, despite his many, many faults did that well.
No, no… slavery, like knitting or moderating a small forum space, is obviously just a hobby, or at worst, a side hustle. It’s just a way to grow your personal brand, not the single worst atrocity across all of human history.
I mean, clicking links in any kind of comment/forum type place on the internet can be dicey, even if it is exactly what it says it is.

It’s not a junk drawer.
It’s an irregular kitchen items drawer.
It’s just the cost of being someone who actually uses their kitchen. We have the garlic press, scissors, pizza cutter, bench scrapers, microplaners, thermometers, etc… in there. All useful things that fit poorly with other things, so they get a drawer all to themselves.
The junk drawer with batteries and twist ties is another drawer.
