I don’t really follow X, Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok, etc. so I basically live under a rock. Sometimes I ask dumb questions to try to understand people a little better. Apologies if my questions inadvertently offend anyone. I mean no harm.

  • Nah it was a while back. IIRC there were multiple sources, but I don’t remember any of them 🙃

Though, I don’t really remember the details either. Maybe it was OS specific? I know there was a dodgy FUSE implementation out there for macOS at some point, and Cryptomator mounts its local drive with FUSE. I use macOS and NixOS, so it coulda been that.

  • This might be a weird question, but: Did you have a particular reason to learn Swedish or Norwegian, or is it just for fun?

I’ve been interested in learning Swedish or Danish, but I haven’t been able to find a practical reason to. I hear that almost all of them speak English pretty well, and will prefer speaking English with you if you visit their country. (The curse of being a native English speaker who likes languages.)

I would have had easy access to a native Danish speaker, but sadly, my Mormor (“mother’s mother”) passed away just last night. Her English was perfect as she lived in the US for >70 years, but her beautiful accent is what originally sparked my interest in Scandinavian languages.

  • I don’t have any big answers, but just a small piece of advice: Don’t shame people for asking questions when they just want to learn.

I would think that’s the perfect opportunity to educate someone, but so many people will just down-vote a naive question and move on without explanation, which is even more confusing.

I’m speaking from my own experience. I still tend to be neutral on a lot of things so far, but my brain is kinda… unusual. I think most people might gradually feel pushed away, “othered”, etc. and eventually lean in the opposite political direction than you might want.

TL;DR: If you want people on your side, stop pushing them away. And maybe ask others on your side to stop too.
