  • There are already lots of H5N1 vaccines for both animals and humans, and the US, for example, has stockpiles of millions. But if at some point the virus mutates to be able to circulate among humans (which it has not), existing vaccines would almost certainly not provide protection against that new virus. Since there is no virus like that yet, there is no vaccine for it yet, but pharmaceutical companies have been creating flu vaccines for many decades and would probably be able to create one and scale it up quickly


  • Addressing the education portion of your question, I grew up in the American South in the 1980s-90s, and I learned plenty about the horrors of slavery and Jim Crow in school. I recognize this is a single data point, but am pretty sure these are widely taught. I also don’t really hear anyone calling for a return to slavery or Jim Crow, so this education seems to have successfully imbued our culture with a sense that these are bad things.

    I think your overall question is answered somewhat by the fundamental demographics of each country. What percentage of Germans today are ethnically German? A lot. In the US, our racial mix is much more fragmented, to the point where racial minorities have thriving subcultures that some people don’t view as extolling “traditional American values,” whatever those are. But these subcultures are increasingly visible and powerful, leading to resentment among many who view their culture, that of “traditional American values,” as losing power.

    The single largest ethnic group in the US are people of German descent (I’m one of them), with well over 40 million people, and these people along with people of British descent are largely the ones driving this “traditional American values” bullshit. People of Irish descent used to be subject to serious racism in the US in the early 20th century, but have since been fully accepted into the dominant white culture and many now also participate in white racism against Black and Hispanic people.

I worked many years for a large hospital system that I watched transform from clinician-run, with nurses, doctors, and social workers in almost all leadership positions, to MBA-run, with people with no clinical experience in almost all leadership positions. Everything just got worse and worse over time as decision after decision was made that compromised clinical integrity in favor of saving a few dollars. I don’t work there anymore

    This is only going to target garbage-level content. You can still expect the same clickbait-style titles and thumbnails from established creators















  • I had a conversation with management and they told me I don’t open up, which is fair and true and told me to be more empathetic with my coworkers.

    Except that I can’t and I don’t care about most of them. As said, I just want to work and go home. I consider most of them childish, gossipy and immature. Of course I didn’t tell management this.

    It seems possible to me you’ve missed the message delivered by your supervisor. You plainly state here that you despise your coworkers and your supervisor is saying you need to approach your coworkers with more empathy. To me, that sounds not like you’re just trying to keep to yourself, but that you’re probably acting like an asshole somehow in giving the cold shoulder to everyone.

    I think you’re really struggling with “black and white” thinking here, to think that you would have to debase yourself and pretend to have a bright and bubbly disposition in order to be pleasant and respectful toward your coworkers. You don’t have to be mean and disdainful in order to maintain your personal boundaries at work. Your supervisor might have been on to something, because developing empathy with your coworkers can help you let go of your disdain for them and will probably help you function more effectively in your role.

    I worked in healthcare a long time, and the field is certainly dominated by extroverts, but I’ve known plenty introverts in all hospital roles who got along just fine. Healthcare is not a job you can do by yourself. You are always going to have to function as part of a team. If you hate other people so much that you’re just going to move from job to job hating everyone you work with, and you feel like you have no other option than to do this, maybe consider speaking with a therapist to try to develop new ways of relating to the world instead of just being miserable.
