  • Right, but with Matrix it’s a learning curve just to get started. That’s not to mention running a server either, discord makes that whole process much easier and done in a few buttons, and you don’t have to worry about uptime or any of that unlike self hosting, and it’s free. That makes it even harder to get friends onto the platform who don’t care about any of that, despite how good it may be considered to be.

It is absolutely a good messaging app. Valid place to host a community? Debatable, sure. In fact it’s so good, that Revolt is almost a direct copy of it as shown above.

Whether that makes it a good app to use is another matter. Don’t know about the spyware, or it’s economic sustainability, but it has been around for years and years so it must be doing something right in terms of being sustainable, because it has sustained itself.

Regardless of Discord though, the biggest issue with moving platforms is getting people to move there. It’s taken this long to get some of my friend group off of WhatsApp, and some still stubbornly stick to Facebook Messenger (true particularly at universities).

  • I also do programming and am fairly used to the terminal, and I still have a headache when thinking of going back to linux, because even when I want to do something as simple as watching netflix on firefox I had to go through a maze of troubleshooting via the terminal to get the correct packages installed. I can’t imagine what someone who isn’t tech savvy who tries to switch to linux would do.

The user experience on linux and its distributions just aren’t there for the everyday user, and until they are, windows will always be the preferable choice because it actually works. You don’t have to end up having a dispute with it on some arbitrary software download because it doesn’t quite like it, and have to wrangle through many software alternatives that aren’t always available or even anywhere near feature ready because they aren’t available on the platform.

I mean facebook marketplace and craigslist you’re just as likely to find furniture that’s already from IKEA or some similar retailer, anything better will likely cost way more unless someone really wants to get rid of it.

Also it should be no surprise that used IKEA furniture will also be way cheaper.

If you’re adamant about that, then I guess this largely depends on where you live. Outside of one lucky find in a furniture charity shop I haven’t had that luxury, not to mention that you don’t get to choose what furniture you’re getting there.

All IKEA furniture I’ve bought has lasted a long time, but the meme is wrong, the reason it even exists is you can’t buy better quality furniture for the same price, at least not by very much, it will cost a lot more if you want amazing quality.
