  • Also worth adding that the original concept of the Senate was meant to give more representation to the political bureacracy/aristocracy class.

Originally, state legislatures voted amongst themselves to appoint state senators to represent them at the Federal level.

Then, in 1913, the 17th Ammendment was passed, which mandated the populations of states voting for their Federal Senators, not the state legislatures.

So, the original idea of Senators was pretty much that they were to be ‘august, seasoned statesmen’… or more cynically, well connected elder political insiders who functionally amounted to an aristocracy… vs the House, who would be… fucking whoever, basically…

And then that was altered around 100 years ago such that Senators are more directly democratically chosen… but, they still serve 6 year terms as opposed to 2, and very much still are the elder statesman/aristocrat types, usually older than House of Rep members, etc.

  • One particular thing that helped me with ‘eliminating’ snacks:

Replace things like potato chips… with trail mix.

You can usually get a fairly decent sized bag, you can probably pick from a few different mixes of varying kinds of nuts, dried fruit, m&ms or some tiny treat mixed in.

Of course, if you have nut allergies… sorry you’re SoL for this one, but if not:

Its a crunchy, salty snack, and you can get a whole lot more full feeling, satiated… from a lot less of a portion of a bag… its just literally more dense, and has protein and other good stuff that isn’t in chips or cheetos or what not, at all.

I will get a 40z mix bag and either have a handful or two or three, and an apple, as a small snack… or maybe along with some other meal I’d normally have chips with.

And that 40z bag tends to last me roughly 3 weeks.

Way, way, way more cost effective than the cost of eating chips in that way… chips are just stupidly expensive now, and are quite unhealthy to eat regularly.

But yeah, if you can turn a ‘snack’ from basically junk food or candy or mini cakes of some kind… into something like trail mix and fresh fruit?

Way healthier for you, and probably works out to costing about as much or potentially less, especially if you can acclimate your ‘sugar’ desire back to some kind of fruit that is not seasonal, not stupid expensive.

Also, make a big ass salad with some kind of meat, maybe some shredded cheese (buy a block and a cheese grater, pre sliced or shredded cheese is way more expensive per volume)… but no high calorie dressing… into a normal just ‘whole meal’.

(This is also a good idea in tandem with eating more nuts: you’re gonna want more fiber or you’re gonna be shitting constipated bricks if you’re older than about 30, rofl)

Vinegrettes tend to be lower calorie, but you have to do some investigation, a lot of them are also as bad as ranch or blue cheese or whatnot.

Beyond that: Get a rice cooker and / or crockpot, and either keep some kind of stew always going, or learn how to cook rice properly, and make soups/stews with veggies, seasoning, beans or meat … a whole category of things you know how to cook well.

Personally, properly making rice still eludes me, but I am learning… crockpot with just some chopped up veggies, potatoes, and either meat or beans is… easier for my culinarily disinclined white ass, lol.

You can also get various broths and soup stocks to basically turn making decent stews into easy mode, they’re fairly cheap by volume, and you often don’t need as much as you might think you would.

  • Got seriously injured, basically all the muscles and tendons on the right side of my body are still fucked up, 2 years later.

But! PT is slowly working, typing is no longer unbearably painful… and I am starting to get the right side of my diaphragm and abdomen working more normally again.

And I can now finally sing again!

Not professionally trained, but I am a natural baritone, and can more or less sing all the Johnny Cash songs I know, a lot of Beatles songs… for whatever reason, I think my favorite to sing is still Grounds for Divorce by Elbow.

I used to be able to go a good deal higher pitch as well, but… that I think I’ve lost mostly just as I’ve grown older and … had more testosterone happen.

  • So, to all the people freaking out and saying this is as bad as Musk and Neuralink:

    https://starfishneuroscience.com/blog/ultra-low-power-miniature-electrophysiological-electronics/?header-bg=card-bg0

There is here zero mention of things like ‘being able to take a phone call’ or ‘bluetooth your brain directly into a keyboard or mouse or other people’s brains’ as Musk was saying.

This seems very much intended to be aimed at legitimate medical conditions.

They didn’t steal the PhD work of an actual pioneer in the development of medical brain implants via poaching a number of grad students who worked with him (which is what happened with Neuralink, btw), they are instead partnering with basically a nonprofit cooperative of the world’s foremost experts on nanoelectronics development, who have an established track record of developing various medical devices.

If news comes out about GabeN electrocuting monkeys and pigs to either death, or insanity/brain damage so extreme it causes them to kill themselves to escape the pain (again, this literally happened at Neuralink), then I will absolutely do a 180 heel pivot and condemn the fuck out of that.

Just to be clear here, a BCI is probably the very last thing I would ever be an early adopter of as some kind of commercial, general use product. Seems absolutely insane given the rampant cybersecurity problems just basically everywhere all the time, not to mention I just don’t like the idea of an actual chip in my actual brain, permanent holes in my skull.

Valve and GabeN are not some paragons of virtue, they basically invented (and still widely use and encourage) half of the monetization and dark pattern bullshit that is now everywhere in the entire games industry.

… But to me at least, this seems nowhere near as openly, comically, real world supervillain levels of evil as Elon and Neuralink.

  • Sorry to double post, but now I just saw a post there from its … main? only? … moderator, and now its apparently ‘woman and non binary’…

…so ok, not just women anymore, I guess?..but uh… I am a guy who is generally cishet presenting, but also has cosplayed as female characters, done… not quite dragshows, but basically gender norm swap themed parties, I’ve helped a whole lot of romantic and platonic female friends put together their own outfits and makeup styles, and visa versa, and I sometimes will just incorperate articles of clothing literally sized for and advertised as womens clothes into my normal dress… but I don’t identify as nb, because ultimately I am comfortable with the moniker of ‘male’, I just think ‘maleness’ can or should extend beyond the stereotypical social ‘presentation’ norms…

Yep, I got no clue at this point whether or not my presence there is allowed or not.

  • Hah, I was born in the very late 80s… I know the exact generation lines between X and Millenial are somewhat contentious, but I’d probably either be a Millenial or ‘Elder Millenial’.

… I just picked up tech stuff at a very young age, and also had a number of … not actual uncles, but ‘cool uncle’ type people in my life, guys and gals a bit older than me, but not as old as my parents… so I’ve had more exposure to the music and culture and such more particular to Gen Xers.

    Uh I guess, smell you later, bodacious, r a d i c a l ! ! ! or something rofl.

  • Which is a fundamentally unenforceable rule unless you rely on posters to go out of their way and be polite enough to say ‘hey I’m not a woman but I appreciate many topics of discussion here.’

Before I realized that ‘girls only’ was an actual rule, I made several comments there that were generally popular, and only the ones where I added a ‘I am a guy, but here is how I would approach this woman’s fashion’ type comments… those ones, I got asked to leave, with other commenters saying ‘no, let them stay!’, and the ones where I didn’t mention I am a guy, they just got upvoted and spawned other silly convos.

    Oh well, I guess?

  • I started being online back when forums, geocities, mIRC, AOL IM were the norm… then MySpace, then Digg, then Facebook, then Reddit… etc etc…

Yeah, at this point, I basically just non religiously pray that Lemmy never becomes super duper popular.

Its the Yogi Berra quote: Nah, that place is too crowded, nobody goes there anymore.

Seen basically every online… social interaction zone of any kind … be neat initially, then start getting lame, and eventually become an active SCP style cognito hazard that actively destroys the minds of those who use it, yet they become the new default norm standard.

Lemme have my pork and beans and memes in peace, away from the rightwing/russian troll armies, away from the idiot boomers that ruined facebook (I know a good number of non evil ones are on lemmy), away from the dramatubers and streamers and psycopathic tiktokkers…
