I think it’s easily understandable honestly. They got to this point a certain way and it’s become habit and a source of their power which they strive to increase. At a certain level of wealth it also just increases by itself.

Community =/= instance
Relies on enough people figuring out or getting enough issues with one community to actively do so. How often has this actually happened?
How do you raise your voice in a community if you get silenced there?
I think instances that host certain communities have the responsibilty of setting a certain baseline for mods. In reality if a community on a certain topic gets big enough most people will join the biggest instance of their community of interest.
I think instances should be allowed to set their own direction but genocide denial is something I really can’t have. Most lurkers and regular commentors (even on something like a meme community) will never see the bias and modlog of the mods. In an ideal world your approach would work but I doubt it does in reality as some communities become too big to fail and become the default. The mod would have to do a lot wrong to mess it up after that
The mods of that community don’t own .world do and they do have the power to remove mods that don’t follow general policy and abuse their power
I honestly don’t like default instance approach. I think people should be able to select tags and they’d get communities recommended with maybe a flag of the country where it comes from next to it and like just a list of blocked communities from that home (inaccesible planets) and like a short description. I don’t think lemmy should become as centralised. I like your idea for that approach. If one community shuts down or like the admins or mods act stupid it would suck for users to not have been given a choice.
B… But I thought 2025 would be the year of the Linux desktop!
Personally I’ve been using FreeTube for accessing YouTube as they are FOSS. Only thing I wish they would have a feature to share like subs with Tubular and watch history somehow. It doesn’t have all the platforms Grayjay has but for just YouTube its pretty great
I think its one of the reasons reddit will never reach the mainstream like reddit. For one people find it confusing to find a community which I disagree with, you just need to take a slight effort to understand that you have a choice of community and in return you get great freedom. Since its mostly for more techies I and its overwhelmingly like left, people with moderate right views will feel like they’re completely out of place.
Im also sad that many of the bigger communities like ml have unhinged mods that ban for anyone disagreeing with them. For example some calls for violence being overwhelmingly onesided on here made me feel sick at times. But I don’t feel like sparking that debate over here.
So it needs to be changed politically. If the people actually voted in their interest there would be no problem. If they vote against themselves they are at fault themselves. Thats how democracy works, even if its sad
Wish more people talked about reform than violence tbh. Thinking about leaving lemmy since associating myself with some people here makes me sick
The argument to ask who casts justice and decides the barrier is a legit one. You are using a strawman argument against him by saying they are in favor of allowing destruction of the lives of Americans happen. Such tactics are mostly used by populists and we do not need to stoop to such levels
The justice system should cast justice, and for that we need political pressure and reform. Self justice is not right in that way
The political system needs to change, killing CEOs will change nothing. They are just some random corpo people with a good work history and education that get paid well to act in the interest of shareholders. Nothing will change with this death. The US public just seems too ignorant about this massive issue. The US is a democracy and if the public actually pushed for strong healthcare reform and didn’t vote for someone who wants to cut healthcare benefits they could get improvement. All I see is radical violence LARPing that leads to nothing and some people acting all high and mighty acting self just which argue to kill like the top 1% and redistribute it and demonize them ignoring the fact that the masses aren’t behind them. This is lemmy, this is not real life! The chaos this causes just leads to more suffering without a solution. And a random guy who had the job of CEO died because he acted as he was supposed to in his job. Returning value for shareholders, since if he doesn’t he gets replaced with the next guy.
What about Emby tho?
Ah I see. Good thing someone continued it tho!
What happened to Kbin btw? I used to be on there since the start but the page has been broken since a while for me
I’d have went to the police if the school didn’t do shit or threaten with lawyers. I’d escalate all my options since this shit is not going down with me
I mean the person maintaining this site just chose to not recommend it themself based on valid concerns. Nothing is stopping you from looking into lemmy and using it anyways.
