walktheplank@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•A skill or knowledge that you have that is typically associated with people of the opposite gender but that you think is odd or stupid that people of your own gender don't have?22·12 days agoMy father in law used to give me a hard time about cooking. I asked him to name one pro female chef (this was almost 25 years ago, there weren’t all that many well known at the time). He couldn’t. He never bothered me about it again.

Cooking used to be a big one when I was younger, now it’s more accepted. I also do all the clothes and food shopping for our family of five. Even the teen girls of the family ask me for help with hair, makeup and clothes. All that punking around paid off.
It was pretty common where I live for men to knit and crochet. We are traditionally fishermen in a cold climate. If you can knit a net you can knit mittens too.

Perhaps you just need to learn to use the knife properly. Knives also need a steel which should be used regularly. Blunting a knife on a crust shouldn’t be a thing if you keep your blade sharp. That’s the point.
Not properly. But a chef’s knife can.
And a filet knife does better with fish. And a boning plus a slicing knife does much better with meat. Not my point but that’s ok.
I was a professional cook (up to sous chef) in fine dining for a decade. Guess I’m just an amateur yet.
Sharpen your knife. If it’s not able to cut bread or tomatoes without smooshing it needs sharpening.
There are but two necessary knives. A chef’s knife and a paring knife. Sharpened appropriately. Usually not even a paring knife but sometimes the small size is beneficial.

walktheplank@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How has standing or standing-sitting vs sitting while working affected your life?21·1 month agoThere are all kinds of off brands. Many don’t use the same kind of foam though so they’re not as dense. Many are softer.

Even this whole elbows up thing is fucking terrible. I get why. I understand that people have been indoctrinated to this and it’s part of their identity here. I don’t understand why it has to be absolutley everywhere though.

My eldest daughter and I did this as well. It gave us a super tight bond. I had major medical problems when my other kids were young and they didn’t get the same attention. It’s obvious and I have had to work extra hard to build similar bonds with them.
KEXP is great and listener funded radio. In Canada we have CKUA in Alberta that is independent and listener funded as well.
University radio is also a great place to find new artists.
