This is probably not the right place to write this but I’m not sure if it’s just me so I thought I could ask

I’m not going over details on what I did recently because I don’t feel confortable talking about it and it’s way too vulgar but yeah I keep getting meltdowns just because of age verification. Also I have a tendency of cherrypicking every word from other videos like the ones from SomeOrdinaryGamers videos about the subject

I will just upload some fake id with some faceswap filter for the video. They are getting slop in their ID database, that’s just it.

I can empathize yo. I’ve been a long time digital privacy advocate with a track record of being very outspoken in public about my views which has occasionally resulted in some weird looks from my normal-ish friends. Hell, I get pissed these days in response to age verification, ai facial tracking, low energy Bluetooth tracking, etc… But I try to catch myself before spending the emotional energy on it because long term that isn’t good. When I’m unable to do that, I utilize that anger and stress to do something to combat those efforts whether that’s spreading the word, programming or developing software to mitigate it or offer free software alternatives.

I think its a normal response. People tend to forget that humans are still animalistic and really shouldn’t live like this. Anyways, I’m just a random person but I’m always down to chat if you want to vent :)

You don’t have to share anything that you don’t want to, what you’ve described is enough.

On the Internet, a lot of content is selected for its ability to provoke that kind of mental distress. Algorithms that optimize for ‘engagement’ and content is selected by that algorithm is typically things that produce strong emotional responses like fear and disgust.

If you end up consuming a lot of that content your perceptions, behaviors, and reactions change so that you’re extra sensitive to the messages that you’re exposed to. This manifests in things like being more aware of specific phrasing, words, concepts or imagery in your thoughts. This can be uncomfortable. Being upset and angry all the time is not pleasant.

A ways to mitigate this include to avoiding using any online source/phone app that selects which content that you see for you. Things like Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, Lemmy, etc. The types of content that surface on these places are the kind that appeals to our worst impulses and instincts. Especially on charged topics where there is a lot more content to select from.

Stick to searching for things that you want to see and not going to places that allow you to passively consume content which is selected for you.

    More specifically.

Age verification is a topic that is heavily charged at the moment. A lot of content is being created on the topic and so the ‘best’ content out of this pile is the content that “pushes your buttons” the best. As a result, when you’re consuming a lot of ‘high engagement’ content on emotionally charged topics, you’re exposing yourself to highly refined psychological triggers.

That isn’t to say that these topics are not important, age verification has serious implications that should be discussed. The issues that it is trying to address are also serious and need to be addressed.

The issue is that, in these passive viewing environments, the selection method is biased against you seeing that kind of content. Reasoned debates are not as fun to read than a rant on the topic, after all. The hot takes and angry image macros get all of the upvotes and so the nuanced takes and reasoned arguments are pushed out of your sight. So, you become conditioned towards hot takes and angry images and that sucks.

Not really but it does anguish me to think about it and has forced me to reconsider how I’m going to use the internet going forward. That open access to it can be taken away at any moment and now is the time to start downloading what I can.

We already see certain countries where websites require you to create an account linked to your ID in order to post, or even scroll further than a page down. It can happen here too. Of course, it’s not going to change how I’m going to do my banking or work since anything I do for those is already attached to my real name. But it could be the end of my forum activity and browsing of “unfavorable topics” as I know it.

    Meltdown? No.

Do I get annoyed because as someone over 30 I still get asked for ID when at the bottlo? Sometimes when I am in a hurry.

So far, the only time I’m asked about age is a pop up on a porn site. If identify verification becomes a regular thing, I’ll find other sites to visit. If it’s at the OS level, I’ll change my OS.

What are you going to do when it’s at the hardware and/or ISP level, and there are no workarounds for it?

I see every reason to anticipate the possibility and look for actual solutions (not just workarounds) that would head it off, such as organizing to defeat “age verification” politically in the first place.

Having a cavalier attitude like yours is a great way to fucking lose in the long run.

            1. Why are you assuming I’m not politically active? There is a good chance we live in different countries and are facing different threats. In my country, the courts have a history of enforcing our Constitution which states we have a right to privacy.
            2. Workarounds (your word btw) are solutions.
            3. If you feel so strongly about id verification at the hardware level you must have a plan. Care to share it with the class?
            4. Yes I have a cavalier attitude about hardware level and ISP level (something our Constitution wouldn’t allow) ID verification. I put my energy into protecting against actual threats.

Its bad but to me its just bad event after bad event and I don’t even feel anything looking at them anymore. I really don’t want to give my ID to non government entities. I’ll probably have to leave the internet if that becomes a reality .

My threat model I’m fine with using a government ID to login to my personal accounts. Like I don’t consider this account private my government and isp can get my real ID in an hour no problem.

it think that some of those videos will inspire a reactionary response if your world never included the asshattery that the epstein oligarchy has been doing to us until now.

Do you mean meltdown as in agressive or it makes you uncomfortable when asked?

Its not really a factor for me, at the moment anyway. I never get asked for ID when buying a bottle of whatever and I haven’t bothered to give ID for “verification” to anything yet and nothing has changed.

Thus far I notice it in steam for games. But that’s just an easy birthday field. Or some pop up on sites.

With trading apps or bank apps, I do have experience with these id verification software. Which isn’t great, but apparently mandatory. Anything else I will refuse to submit id’s

I didn’t get age verification ever, if I did I just shouldn’t use the site. I do get websites that arbitrarily prevent access if you’re using a VPN which is highly annoying.
