Lemmy Be Wholesome@lemmy.world•The power of Star TrekEnglish
23·2 months agoLeft-to-right, top-to-bottom:
- From the TNG episode “Darmok”, where Captain Picard has to learn how to communicate with an alien through shared danger.
- From DS9, the decades-long Bajoran resistance to the brutal Cardassian occupation.
- From the Voyager episode “Message in a Bottle”, where the holographic doctor has to go outside his comfort zone in order to recapture a federation starship from the Romulans.
- From TNG, the friendship between human Geordi and the android Data.
- From DS9, the friendship and subsequent romance between Odo and Kira
- From Voyager, Janeway’s insistence that Borg drones are still people.

81·4 months agoIt could certainly be used as evidence in your favor. Whether it by itself would be enough to exonerate you would depend on things like the evidence against you and how much weight the jury gave to your records.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If one were so inclined, could you take your plot of land, parcel it up into 1-meter-squared (or smaller) sections, and sell each of those sections to different people/companies?English
26·4 months agoThese are known as souvenir plots. Generally, you aren’t buying the land, but rather you’re buying a contractual right to prevent the actual owner from developing the land.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•US question: Would you approve of your state seceding from the Union, declaring independence from the United States? I think California, Oregon, and Washington would, and probably Colorado too.English
11·4 months agoCalifornian. No.
It wouldn’t solve any problems that can’t be solved by other means, and it would create new problems that we haven’t had to worry about before. It’d be a net loss for everyone involved.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Can you recommend history podcasts (or similar)?English
3·6 months agoMike Duncan’s The History of Rome and Revolutions podcasts (particularly the French Revolution series).
Arguably, that’s what happened. The three estates (noble/clergy/commoner) were summoned by the king to an Estates General to discuss political changes, which led to the establishment of revolutionary government.
