EDIT: I guess my true answer to your question is, a very nice watch.

To me, a suit is a sign of weakness. Only two types of people “suit up” to go to work. People selling you something and lawyers. You dress up for an interview because you are selling yourself. You dress up for sales meetings. You dress up to impress someone or as a sign if respectful submission. People who are confident in their skills and/or their position do not try to impress with clothes. A good cake doesn’t get covered in fondant.

Source: I am the CEO of a tech company that deals with some of the largest energy firms in the world. Some of my closest friends are C-level execs of very well known companies. We all dress comfortably. Most times I’m wearing cargo pants, tee, skate shoes and a cap.

PS: A nice watch is a must though. At least for me.

I’ve always had a similar mindset on “business attire”. Just people wearing the costume of a competent successful person in order to convince others that they can be trusted with someone else’s money.

But I’m just a flunky who doesn’t like to dress up and loathes the idea that we all need to present a certain image in order to be successful. So, it’s nice to hear the same from someone who’s higher up the ladder.

I like to dress up. Reminds me to be a portion of myself. I’m not me, I’m work me.

I hate to dress up. The same me who’s trusted with people’s lives is the same me who sits around in shorts and flip flops. Why lie to everyone I meet?

I like to dress up. It’s a socially acceptable mask to wear.

In my experience, most men wearing business casual dress very poorly. I typically see ill-fitting khakis, boxy shoes, and a polo shirt (frequently a polyester golf shirt). Companies that have moved to casual dress (jeans) have done the world a favor by letting these poor guys wear jeans and sneakers (still the polos though…).

We are business casual, like most of the south & west now, and I see men’s fashion expressed mainly through good shoes, and clothes that fit correctly.
